How To Play

Overview

Find words on the board that nobody else has found to gain points. Have the highest score for X consecutive seconds to win. The board changes intermittently, invalidating words you've found. It is both a race against your opponents and against time.

Objective

Hold the highest score of all players in the game for a certain amount of time (ex. 30 seconds). You must have the highest score for the whole duration consecutively, not cumulatively: as soon as another player takes the lead, the former leader's duration is reset.

Getting Points

Find words on the board by connecting the letters in adjacent tiles. Any adjacent tiles may be used while forming words, but you may not use the same tile twice: You may use diagonally-adjacent tiles and paths that cross over themselves, but that path may not re-use a tile.

Work fast! You will receive points for any word on the board that another player has not yet found. Words must be at least three letters long, but more points will be awarded for longer words.

Any word is valid, as long as it is not a proper noun. Pluralizations, contractions (ex. 'CANT') and anglicized words (ex. 'CAFE') are also typically valid.

Losing Points

There are two ways that points can be taken away from a player:

Words can be stolen by another player. If you are holding points from finding a word (i.e. that word is in your 'Scoring Words' list), and another player later finds the same word, your points will be taken away. Neither player, you or the player whom stole the word, will receive any points from this word; the word will be moved from your 'Scoring Words' list into the 'Common Words' list seen by all players.

You will lose points from a tile on the board changing when that tile was required to form one of the words in your 'Scoring Words'. If one of the tiles used to form a word is changed, and there is no other way to form that word on the board, you will lose the points you had scored by finding that word; the word will be removed from your 'Scoring Words' list and your score will decrease. A countdown to the next tile-change is depicted by the bar below the board.

Donut Chart

The size of your piece of the donut is proportional to the amount of points you are currently holding. If yours is the largest piece of the donut, you are the leader. Your piece is always the blue one.

The total points of words within the 'Common Words' list determines the size of the hole in the donut. The more words in common, the bigger the donut hole.

A large donut hole indicates a highly competitive match! Good for you if you achieve this!

Playing With Friends

Word Torrent can be played with friends around you or over the internet. To enter into a match with your friends, simply let them know your Room ID. This can be done verbally, by text message, over the phone, etc. They will then enter that Room ID from the main page to join your room. Alternatively, use the Share button. This will copy a link to your room onto your clipboard, so you can paste it into whatever messaging app you choose.

A room remains active until the last player of the room leaves.

When you enter a room, you will have a name in the format Player_#. You can change your name by clicking the Edit button.

Work-In-Progress Notes:
  1. Improve instructions page (with pictures / animations)
  2. Sound effects for tile change and word entry?
